Dr. Plant Celebrates One-Hundred Deliveries

Dr. Gary Plant of Madras Medical Group (MMG) recently delivered his one-hundredth baby since arriving in Madras.  “It’s kind of a fun milestone for me,” said Dr. Plant, “because caring for moms and babies is one of my very favorite things to do.”

MMG provides family-centered maternity care including both vaginal deliveries and Cesarean sections.  The group also provides C-section coverage to patients from the Warm Springs Health and Wellness Center and covers deliveries for patients who receive their prenatal care through Mosaic Medical.

“I think Mountain View Hospital is a great place to have a baby,” says Dr. Plant.  “Our facilities are excellent, and the care by nurses is very personalized—usually one-on-one with the patient.  Most of my patients who have also delivered at other facilities tell me they liked their experience at Mountain View better.”  Dr. Plant has personal experience with Mountain View as well—his wife, Jill, delivered their youngest daughter there.

Training and experience are important in providing quality maternity care.  “My partners and I all received excellent training in management of pregnancy, labor, and delivery from both obstetricians and family physicians during residency,” says Dr. Plant.  To stay current, he attends at least one conference a year focused on maternity care and women’s health.  “We end up managing both low- and high-risk pregnancies because of the rural nature of our community.  It’s crucial to be up-to-date on the latest guidelines for gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and other potential complications.”

The physicians at Mountain View Hospital also maintain close working relationships with consulting obstetricians in Bend and Portland for more complicated cases.  Patients who go into labor before 36 weeks gestation and patients with complications requiring specialized care for mom or baby are transferred to tertiary care centers including St. Charles Medical Center in Bend ,Oregon Health and Science University , and Legacy Emmanuel Hospital in Portland.

For Dr. Plant, providing maternity and newborn care remains an important part of his practice.  “This is family medicine at its best,” he says.  “Developing a relationship with a mother over nine months, then continuing that relationship with both her and her baby is the best way I know to really connect with the whole family.  If the grandparents or siblings come to see me, that existing connection really makes the relationship special.”  One of his favorite stories is that of a woman who delivered her last two children with him, then referred three of her sisters for their maternity care.  “I have over ten patients in that family,” he laughs.  “I told them I expect an invitation to the next family reunion!”

MMG offers continuing, premier, full-family care for patients of all ages coordinated with an emphasis on superior quality.  Other family medicine specialty interests include complete maternity care including C-sections, preventative health for adults and children, care for chronic conditions and diseases, and end of life care.  To schedule an appointment, call 541-475-3874.
