Central Processing

Central processing technicians are essential to SCHS’s operations. CP techs provide cleaning, decontamination, sterilization and inspection of surgical instruments, devices, and implants. According to the American Society for Healthcare Central Service Professionals (ASHCSP), central sterilization and supply and distribution professionals "influence hospital purchases and health care practices by holding responsibility for ensuring that patient equipment is available and sterile for use at all times—during routine examinations, as well as in complex surgeries and procedures”.

Wage Range

Depending upon position, education, and years of experience.

$11.33 to $17.01 per hour
 

Successful candidates should possess:

  • Previous medical, dental or veterinary experience helpful, however no experience is required. On the job training is provided.

  • High School diploma or GED required.

  • Analytical, mechanical and memorization skills.

  • The ability to stand for long periods of time and lift 40 pounds or more. Selected candidates must pass a post-offer physical exam.

Career advancement

Central processing technicians can gain certification through SCHS as a CP Technician II and CP Technician III as they continue to gain knowledge and experience in the department. Certification allows for compensation growth as well. Many of our supervisors have also started out as central processing technicians.
