The Clinical Internship Program is designed for graduate registered nurses with less than six months of acute care experience. The purpose of the program is to enhance clinical and leadership skills, and to facilitate integration into the hospital setting.
Participants in the program will have opportunities to gain clinical competence in basic nursing skills, become proficient at organization and prioritization, apply critical thinking processes to clinical practice and acquire workload management skills.
The eight to 12 week internship consists of 60 to 80 hours per pay period working various shifts with a preceptor trainer at all times. The intern will receive pay comparable to an entry level RN, be eligible for regular benefits and will be covered by the Oregon Nurses Associate contract. If you are accepted into the internship, we do ask for a one-year commitment to the unit for which you are hired, unless they have no positions available upon completion of your internship.

RN Internship Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is an RN Internship?
The RN Internship is a program designed to assist new graduate nurses and nurses who have had less than six months of acute care hospital experience with the transition to an inpatient clinical setting. This is the time to sharpen your organizational and clinical bedside nursing skills with the support of an RN preceptor.
2. What does orientation include at St. Charles Health System?
The orientation process includes three phases: new employee orientation completed by all SCHS employees, clinical nursing orientation and specific department based orientation. The process is individualized and may last from eight to 12 weeks.
3. Does SCHS hire new graduate RNs without an internship?
No. We want to provide an orientation program that will set you up for a successful transition to a registered nurse. This is accomplished by in-service training programs and pairing you with an experienced RN preceptor or mentor.
4. Do RN interns qualify for a sign-on bonus or relocation assistance?
No. SCHS does not provide sign-on bonuses for staff members. Relocation assistance is handled on a case-by-case basis for experienced nurses and other hard-to-fill positions.
5. Do RN interns receive a salary during their internship?
Yes. RN interns are paid RN wages according to our normal compensation practices.
